What has English got to do with 73? It is not an English word, it is a radio code. It
means things like "Best Wishes" and the equivalent in other languages, "Bon Chance"
or whatever. It is already plural, so 73's is like saying "Best Wishes's".

You might use 73's only if you are speaking to more than one person, i.e.
Broadcasting but who would say "Best Wishes's to everyone" and consider it good
grammar?

My HTX-202 warms up a bit too on low power.  I don't have the heat
sink (belt clip) installed... it mungs up my belt.

I have had some trouble with recieve PL...  I set my HT to use PL
squelch (open up when PL is recieved)... and even though the local
repeaters transmit their own PL, my HT sometimes kicks in and out.
Anyone else have that problem?  Is this normal, or a defective unit,
or an adjustment that can be made?

I have noticed this with the HTX-404 that I own also.  I believe it is either
multipath, poor signal strength causing the PL to not be "heard" by the
HTX-404, or a mix of inbound and outbound PL at the repeater site that
nulls or drastically reduced the level of the outbound PL.

If you hear of any way to make these radios less PL sensitive, let me know.
It's a little annoying, but not unworkable.  (i.e. I'm not using mine to
get rid of any other interferance, just to listen for certain PL's from
the repeater that are for emergencies, etc... so if I hear ANYTHING from
the radio, I can just turn the receive PL off and listen without
interruption.)

Michael,

I too have been offended by some of the finger-pointing going on.  The
idea that all repeaters must be open repeaters is not communistic -- in
that all of the spectrum is public property and this condition is a not
totally unreasonable condition in exchange for permission to reserve a
part of it for someone's repeater.

However, it isn't necessary to go that far.  I would be happy for a
"Scrubba" policy that would increase the availability of open repeaters
in the future.  I'd be really happy if they figured out a way to do that
in some way other than attrition.

Roger is an extra class ham who has earned his wings.  But more than
that, he's human being and an American who is simply fed up about an
unfortunate condition.  He doesn't deserve to be called names for
anything he has said here.

Subject: Nickel Hydride Cells

I have just bought 6 Nickel Hydryde AA cells for use with my Icom handheld. I
wonder if anyone has any experience with such cells they are able to share? The
cells are matked as 1.2V 1200mA hours. They weigh about the same as Nicads but
claim to be "Green". I gather they must not be fast charged. This is not a problem
as I do not have a fast charger. However the standard ICOM rate is 70mA and they
need 120mA. Rather than wait longer than necessary, I suppose I should fast charge
them, but at what rate? Would 240mA for 7 hours be OK? How about 360mA for 5 hours?

I hope they will last longer than Nicads, they ought to with 1.2 AH Vs 0.7 AH but
one never knows how the capacity relates to discharge characteristics. A handheld
takes about 2A for TX and only 40mA on standby, quite a difference.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks to the Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society, Northern Ohio DX
Association, Ohio/Penn PacketCluster Network, DF4RD, DL7VEE & DXNL,
PA3EZL, SM0CNS, SP6TPM, AD1C, NA2M, KA3DBN, WB4LFM and AA4NC for
the following DX information.

A3, TONGA. This will be the last week to work Paul, KK6H/A35RK, because
he will be going QTH June 18th. He can usually be found on 20 meters
(14175-14226 kHz) SSB between 0330 and 0500z. Also, check the low end
(CW band) on 40 meters around 1330z. He also likes RTTY; check around
14086 kHz around the same time as above. QSL via KK6H.

C5, THE GAMBIA. Uli, DK2OC, and Brendan, G0UCT, now active from here
signing C56/ their homecall will be going QRT June 17th. They have been
active on all bands, but with an emphasis on the WARC bands. The modes
being used are CW, SSB and RTTY. QSL C56/DK2OC to DK2OC and C56/G0UCT
to G1GMZ.

D2, ANGOLA. The Red Cross will be sending Peter, ON6TT, to D2-land
June 16th through July 16th. His callsign is undetermined yet, but he
plans lowbands and WARC activity. Due to the circumstance Peter will be
using commercial equipment, therefore he will not have the capability to
work split. QSL via ON5NT. After Angola, Peter will be active from
7Q-land July 16th to August 1st.

D4, REPUBLIC OF CAPE VERDE. Angelo, D44BC, has been heard on 17 meters
and RS-12 this month. Check 18128 kHz around 1130z or on RS-12 check
between 29430 and 29445 from 1200 to 1430z.

FT5, KERGUELEN ISLAND. Pierre, FT5XJ, was heard active this past weekend
on a DX net on 14226 kHz around 0530z. He will be leaving in July and
will return three months later. QSL via F5NLL (F1NLL in the CB).

KG4, GUANTANAMO BAY (Cancelled). The planned operation by Bill, KQ4GC
in Guantanamo Bay for June 10-17 has been cancelled.

HB0, LIECHTENSTEIN. Eight members from the Eindhoven Students Radio
Amateur Club (ESRAC club calls - PI4TUE and PI5EHV) will be active
between 1800z July 6th to 1200z July 11th. Activity will be on all
bands (including 6m, 2m and 70cm), CW, SSB, RTTY and Packet. Their
main emphasis will be taking part in the IARU HF Championship CW/SSB
and the CQ WW WPX VHF/UHF Contests. The group has requested the callsign
HB0TUE for the entire operation. If they cannot get the requested
callsign, operators will sign HB0/ and their personal callsigns. All
QSLs go to PI4TUE.

R1, MALYJ VYSOTSKIJ ISLAND. The "DX-LOGGEN" reports an operation will
take place July 30-31st. There is not much information available at
this time other than the callsign will be R1MVI.

RA1Z, LUMBOVSKIY ISLAND, RUSSIA. Dick, RW1ZZ, will be active from this
Russian Island starting June 15th for about two weeks. He will be active
as RW1ZZ/1 on CW/SSB. The IOTA of this one is EU-161 (or for the RRA
award, RR-03-01). QSL to RA1ZA.

SP2PIT/1, WOLIN ISLAND, POLAND. Several members of SP-IOTA-Club will be
active from EU-132 (SPIA SZ-02), June 25-30th. Activity will be on 80-10
meters, CW, SSB and RTTY. They will also try to activate Usedom Island
(IOTA EU-132, SPIA SZ-01) and some other islands for the Polish Islands
Award (SPIA) if the weather conditions are good.

TL, CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC. Gene, TL8NG, has been active on CW the past
month on the WARC bands. Check 12, 17 and 30 meters between 1330 to 1600z
and again after 0430z. There was also a report that he shows up on the
21335 DX net sometimes (check around 1400z). QSL via WA1ECA.

TY, BENIN. A couple of stations have been active this month from TY-land.
A German operator (DJ4IJ) is currently active as TY1IJ until sometime in
July. This station will be active mainly on SSB and the WARC bands. Check
14275 kHz around 2200z. QSL via DJ5IO. TY1PS was active over the past
weekend in the RTTY contest. QSL via TY1PS via Peter Schulze, B.P.
06-2535, Cotonou, Benin.

VP2E BEACON OFF THE AIR!. Dave, VP2EHF, reports that the Auguilla 6 meter
beacon is enroute to the U.S. for repair. However, Dave advises that
anyone hearing the Caribbean on 6 meters and needs VP2E to call him or
his wife (Dorothea, VP2EE) at 1-809-497-2150 (or FAX: [phone]).
They will be glad to work you.

VP5, TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS. Will, AA4NC, will be active as VP5NC in
the IARU HF Championship in July on SSB and CW. There will be activity
before and after the contest on the WARC bands. QSL via CBA.

XU, KAMPUCHEA. This is a hard one to work for the guys in the mid and
east coast states, especially with the poor propagation. Sanyi, HA7VK,
continues to be active from here as XU7VK until February 1995. Look for
him on 20 meters SSB between 1245 and 1400z.

FAX YOUR DX INFORMATION NOW! Faxing is available Monday/Wednesday/Friday
from 0430 to 2330z only. The number is 216-237-8208 and the FAX card is
sharing the same phone line as BARF-80 BBS using a data/fax/phone switch.

I guess all I can suggest is get the extended warranty.  In the last 5
months I killed two of them.  One just decided to start flashing error
codes at me one day when I turned it on.  The other was exposed to a VERY
minor amount of moisture, it was drizzling, and it quit totally.
My recommendation it to buy "Name Brand".  The base models of ICOM,
Kenwood, and Yaesu are not that much more expensive.

This "Scrubba Policy" has been subverted by all the clever groups who
operate "closed" repeaters. Closed not Private. Check it out ... most of
the new closed repeaters are really open systems for any ones enjoyment.
The amateur community will quietly re-write the policy through this vary
action. What does this word closed mean when you can have an open 2meter
repeater be re-coordinated as closed, to try to maintain some semblence of
order. That group says the repeater is really open. Being closed really is
a far cry from having a Private repeater with no activity taking up
spectrum in southern california.

I have been run off several private socal repeaters when I have been
travelling in the area, but I have been welcomed on most. So what! The
good 440 amateurs in socal still far outnumber the jerks on 440.

NO!  Whatever else you may read, there is NOT a way to modify the HTX-202
or HTX-404 to go out of band.  Tandy has put out a bulletin about
numerous HTX series radios coming into their factory that have been
damaged beyond repair by someone trying to follow the instructions of a
"out-of-band mod" sheet for the HTX radios.  (202 expecially)

There is, however, a code to open up the HTX-404 to cover the entire 440
mhz ham band, and that can be found in the HTX-404 manual.  I assume this
is for folks experimenting with Amateur satellites and the like, I've never
needed to do it to use local repeaters or 446.000 simplex.

I wish I was a `technical stud' - then I wouldn't have to spend weeks
trouble shooting these QRPp xmtrs - getting the bugs  out is just as
much fun as operating them, though.

I'll upgrade to at least advanced either as soon as  I finish this Ph.D.
or they kick me out of grad school - I've used up 3 years and haven't
done very much..... only 4 years remaining to get everything done. Phooey.
